“(Osama) Bin Laden and Ayman Al Zawahiri came in to fill a void of leadership where a large population feels disenfranchised, in Afghanistan. Also, this was filled by Al Qaeda and the Taliban who have infiltrated and are now running Afghanistan.
Dr. Parker’s book was focused on strategic communication, something that Al Qaeda did and does well. They communicate what their views are. They were successful in raising a lot of money for their cause. Al Zawahiri was imprisoned in Egypt and Russia, as part of the Chechen movement. Governments were close several times to shutting this down. But Al Zawahiri was released from Egypt and Russia, and then had activities in Iran and beyond, influencing people. He was able to communicate well and use the internet to reach those who felt disenfranchised.
Al Qaeda can now move unchecked in Afghanistan.
If you compare this to Hitler, who was not well educated but was considered a war hero from WWI. While he was in jail, he wrote Mein Komf and was strengthened upon getting out. He wasn’t checked as he left. And neither was Al Zawahri. Al Zawahri was part of the Muslim brotherhood starting at age 14.
