A naval officer’s education continues long after formal schooling ends. That’s likely more true in today’s complex Navy than it was for midshipmen in the Class of 1905, here being shown the ropes, so to speak, by a Naval Academy instructor. The authors believe their advice and guidance can lessen the steep learning curve officers face when assuming command of their first ship.
